The City of Beckley in Southern West Virginia offers the best of town and country with the amenities of a city and abundant recreational opportunities of a mountain escape. Established in 1838, Beckley is now home to approximately 17,000 citizens, yet it serves over 100,000 people in the region. Located on a plateau at the intersections of Interstates 77 and 64 and Route 19, the city is at a crossroads that is easily accessible for business and commerce.

Tourism, arts and entertainment are important to the Beckley area. With cultural local attractions such as Tamarack Marketplace, Theatre West Virginia, Beckley Art Center, Beckley Concert Association, Wildwood House Museum and the Appalachian Festival, the Smithsonian Magazine honored Beckley as one of the Top 20 Small Towns for Cultural Enrichment.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy four seasons of activities in the region with attractions such as WinterPlace ski resort, Lake Stephens, Little Beaver State Park, the YMCA sports complex, WV Miners baseball, Burning Rock ATV Park, and Grandview. The City has a three-mile paved rail trail known as the McManus Trail that runs through the heart of the city for hiking and biking, and numerous hiking trails are being developed in the Piney Creek gorge and Beckley Mill area. Active SWV offers free exercise opportunities.

The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve and The Bechtel Summit Scouting Center and High Adventure Park are just minutes from Beckley. The Summit hosts the Spartan Games annually in August.

SOME FUN INFO

The Beckley-Raleigh County area has become a center for higher education with access to a variety of colleges and universities. Community members are thrilled that Beckley became the new home of WVU Tech – the campus is located along the same street as City Hall and adjacent to downtown.

New River Community & Technical College has a relatively new campus off of I-64 and is beside the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center where Concord University and Bluefield State classes are offered. The University of Charleston, Valley College and Appalachian Bible College offer specialized training here.

With three hospitals (Raleigh General Hospital, BARH and Veterans) and several clinics, the community is also a health care center for the area.

Whitewater Kayaking

Piney Creek boasts 12 miles of continuous class IV kayaking as it makes its way into the New River Gorge. The creek is an amazing backyard playground for the experienced kayaker.

Hiking / Biking Trails

Over 50 miles of total trails throughout Beckley / Raleigh County. 4.5 mile McManus Trail that runs through the city of Beckley. 14 different trails in the Gray Flats Trail System that include easy to intermediate and wind their way into the spectacular New River Gorge. Future plans to connect Beckley trail systems to Mt. Hope trail systems which will eventually connect to Fayetteville.

Winter Sports

Winterplace Ski Resort is the perfect place for beginners to learn to ski and more advanced skiers and riders to improve their technique or just spend some time having fun with family and friends. Our runs have 100% snowmaking, so even if mother nature can't get it to snow, we can. For the non-skiers in the group, we have a snow tubing park - no special equipment needed.
